Want to see future Indiana University and Purdue players?

Emerging talent will be on display
Events in Fort Wayne, Bloomington will feature high school basketballs top recruits.
How about some of the talent coaches Tom Crean and Matt Painter are chasing in addition to players likely to make an impact in the Big Ten and around the nation?

The spring/summer season that plays such a large part in college basketball recruiting is in full swing, and May brings a number of key events to Indiana.

The Bill Hensley Memorial Spiece Run ‘n Slam kicked off May with 192 teams and some of the nation’s top prep players last weekend in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Adidas May Classic, held at Indiana University and high schools around Bloomington, Ind., is May 15-17, and the Memorial Day Run ‘n Slam is May 22-24 at the Spiece Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne.

Both events are open to the public.

Here’s a quick primer on some of the story lines:

So far . . .

A number of players have had impressive performances.

Purdue recruit Terone Johnson of North Central had a 28-point game for the Eric Gordon All-Stars last weekend.

Pike’s Marquis Teague, one of the most sought-after guards in the nation, and Ohio State recruit DeShaun Thomas of Fort Wayne Luers have been as impressive for Spiece Indy Heat.

Bloomington, Ind.-based Indiana Elite has so much talent it has two 16-and-under teams. One, Team Indiana, has won two tournaments, including last weekend’s Run ‘n Slam.

Where to watch

The Adidas May Classic will have approximately 165 teams. Both the Spiece and Indiana Elite programs will be playing along with marquee teams from other states such as the Michigan Mustangs, Southern California All-Stars, Derrick Rose All-Stars and the New Jersey Roadrunners.

The Roadrunners include 6-2 point guard Kyrie Irving, one of IU’s main targets among players who will be seniors. Rivals.com ranks Irving the No. 4 point guard in the country.

“The best players in Indiana are all coming,” Classic organizer Criss Byers said.

The best games will be at IU and are open to the public.

The Memorial Day Run ‘n Slam, which is also open to the public, is expected to have around 250 teams, organizer Todd Hensley said.

Spiece Indy Heat, with Teague and Thomas, will be one of the main attractions. Purdue recruit Travis Carroll of Danville and Michigan State recruit Russell Byrd of Fort Wayne also will be playing. Harrison Barnes, a highly sought recruit out of Iowa, is another attraction.

State’s run continues

Indiana, especially in the younger classes, is loaded.

The Indiana Elite program features North Central’s D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, Muncie Central’s Jeremiah Davis and Terre Haute North’s Justin Gant. Carmel’s A.J. Hammons and Broad Ripple’s Ron Patterson are with Spiece.

IU and Purdue are recruiting Smith-Rivera, Davis, Hammons and Patterson.

Indiana Elite’s other 16-and-under team includes IU recruit Matt Carlino from Arizona, Marshall Plumlee, younger brother of Duke recruit Mason Plumlee; and Cody Zeller, younger brother of former Indianapolis Star Indiana Mr. Basketball winners Luke and Tyler Zeller.
